This year has seen a ridiculous amount of new hardware released in the PC market. Two processors are available today and they"ve been on pre-order for a while - the Ryzen Threadripper 1950X ($999)và Ryzen Threadripper 1920X ($799). The former sports a massive 16 cores & 32 threads while the 1920X has 12 cores and 24 threads. There"s also a 1900X, which will have just 8 cores & 16 threads.


There are also rumors of nonX-edition Threadrippers in the pipeline, which would plug the sizeable price gaps between the three processors we know about. This would fit with what we saw with the Ryzen 3,5 và 7 ranges, which all featured both X-edition và nonX-edition CPUs, the latter coming with lower cloông xã speeds & boost speeds. However there are a couple of important differences between AMD & Intel"s processors.

AMD vs Intel

The most obvious is that in terms of dollars per core, Intel is far more expensive. There"s a more feature-focused difference, though, which is that AMD offers the full amount of PCI-E lanes across all its Threadripper CPUs. This dictates how much bandwidth will be available for graphics cards, PCI-E storage devices such as SSDs or other I/O such as 10Gbps LAN. AMD has a big lead over Hãng sản xuất Intel here for starters at a maximum of 64 PCI-E lanes while Intel tops out at just 44.


However,only Intel processors costing $1,000 or more offer 44 PCI-E lanes, starting at the Chip Core i9-7900X, with the cheaper Chip Core i9 7820X and 7800X only offering 28 PCI-E lanes. With all new CPUs come a raft of new motherboards and with Threadripper we get a new CPU socket - sTR4 along with a new chipset - X399. Motherboards are understandably quite pricey at launch, starting at around $349 for the Hãng Asus Prime X399-A while the Hãng Asus ROG Zenith Extreme, which was supplied by AMD along with the two Threadripper CPUs I"m testing today, retails for a whopping $549.

Clearly, even if you"re using two graphics cards, there"s still a lot of bandwidth left over, and as I mentioned earlier, you get the full 64 lanes even with the cheapest 8-core Threadripper CPU.


Installation and cooling

The sTR4 socket isn"t entirely dissimilar lớn Intel"s LGA2066, in that there"s a hefty mechanism và four threaded holes for mounting coolers. However, installation is quite different with each Threadripper CPU coming strapped to lớn an orange clip that allows it to lớn slide inkhổng lồ a metal tray. This then fixes bachồng down onlớn the socket, before a final metal cover is screwed in place.


The new sTR4 socket is not compatible with any other sockets so you"ll either need a new cooler or an adaptor for an existing cooler. However, while most coolers, especially all-in-one liquid coolers và DIY liquid cooling water blocks should cover the dies under the heatspreader, it is so huge that many will leave large areas uncatered for & could impact on thermals. It"s so huge, in fact, that two of the four visible dies underneath are actually dummies, which act khổng lồ tư vấn the heatspreader và also to space the active dies to reduce the heat density.

There are some solutions to this coming, namely Threadripper-specific coolers and water blocks. Performance

Overclocking was a bit mixed, but these are early days with BIOS versions and if Ryzen was anything to lớn go by, Threadripper will likely improve. I managed khổng lồ get the Threadripper 1920X to 4GHz across all cores using a vcore of 1.36V, and the 1950X to lớn 3.85GHz, using 1.39V.The impact of Game mode on performance was significant in some areas too. Unfortunately, I only had enough time to benchmark the 1950X using Game mode, but the improvements it provides are clear. To start with, I overclocked the 1950X, then added Game mode khổng lồ the equation - also with the 1950X overclocked. It did indeed have a huge impact on latency và memory tốc độ as you can see below. The speed of both reading, writing và copying was much higher and latency was lower when enabling Gaming mode.


Power consumption sat at around 160W idle for the whole system with an Nvidia GTX 1080 in the mix too along with 32GB 3000MHz DDR4 memory. Under load this rose to lớn around 310W for both CPUs, and when overclocked, the Threadripper 1920X system draw 388W from the wall, while the 1950X và its additional cores & higher voltage needed 522W.

Game Tests

Hãng sản xuất Intel still enjoys an advantage in some games and Deus Ex is a classic example. However, using game mode as well as applying an overcloông chồng sees the deficit cut quite significantly, with nearly 10fps added to the minimum frame rate just by using game mode.


However, below you can see that Game mode doesn"t always improve game performance with Ashes of the Singularity prefering more cores and threads as opposed to lớn lower latency. Improvements in this games optimisation now see AMD performing very closely lớn Hãng sản xuất Intel, albeit against the similarly priced Chip Core i9-7900X.


Below you can see an example of a more GPU-limited game in Fallout 4, but even here there are slight gains to lớn be had by using trò chơi mode, which added a noticeable boost khổng lồ performance of the average frame rate, while overall AMD and Hãng Intel are fairly equal here.


Unigine"s new Superposition benchmark seemed to lớn respond in much the same way as Deus Ex, with a massive sầu score for the Threadripper 1950X in trò chơi mode, but still reasonable scores compared lớn the Intel Vi xử lý Core i9-7900X otherwise.


Content Creation Tests

Below, the ever popular Cinebench R15 can be used khổng lồ gauge rendering performance, và this definitely leans towards CPUs with lots of cores and threads. Unsurprisingly, Threadripper is dominant here and even the 1920X managed khổng lồ beat the bộ vi xử lý Core i9-7900X, which costs $200 more. Finally, I obtained scores for video editing using Asus" Realbench thử nghiệm suite. This proved lớn be a mixed result for AMD. The Chip Core i9-7900X enjoys a lead over the Threadripper 1920X, và this does suggest that maybe not all cores are being utilized or HandBrake, which is the program behind the benchmark is more optimized for Hãng Intel. Either way, the Threadripper 1950X still beats the Hãng sản xuất Intel CPU convincingly.


Conclusions: AMD or Intel?

As usual, there are benchmarks that lean towards AMD & also some that favor Intel, however, for most multi-threaded nội dung creation applications, AMD is the clear winner in terms of performance or value or both. Cinebench was a disaster for Hãng Intel và if you get paid by the hour for your creative work & rendering/editing time is critical, then for video clip editing, you"d almost certainly opt for the Threadripper 1950X over the Core i9-7900X - it"s a lot faster for the same cash, while the 1920X also packs a punch và outstrips the more expensive Hãng Intel CPU in a number of tests.


Gaming is a more mixed area for AMD. Intel still has an advantage in many tests in direct comparisons with the Vi xử lý Core i9-7900X, but AMD has made up a lot of ground since March and this shows. Even more interesting is that Ryzen Master"s Game mode appears khổng lồ work well in boosting game performance, even if you need to lớn use the program và restart your PC to lớn make the most of it - it"s not completely automatic. If you"re gearing up for an evening gaming session, this won"t likely be an issue & it"s quiông chồng khổng lồ vì.

It"s good to see a reasonable choice of motherboards hitting shelves for the platsize and thankfully, stability và memory support seems khổng lồ be much better than at Ryzen"s launch - again, credit to lớn AMD & motherboard manufacturers this time. Cooling is an area of concern for me, though, as my own photos show that current coolers simply don"t cover enough of the heatspreader to lớn ensure you"re getting maximum cooling. I"d suggest only investing in a cooler claiming lớn be Threadripper compatible if it has an enlarged tương tác plate - hopefully these will be hitting the shelves soon.

As you enter the high-end desktop market, making sweeping statements about who"s best becomes more difficult as there are so many tasks other than gaming that are thrown at these kind of systems. However, Threadripper makes for a massively compelling choice, both in terms of value and performance, especially if you need maximum multi-threaded grunt in tasks such as Clip editing và rendering.
